CulturalCorners Innovation Workshop Successfully
Held in Cyprus

The CulturalCorners Innovation Workshop was successfully completed on 2 April 2026 at Alexander College of Cyprus, bringing together 34 participants from the fields of cultural tourism, hospitality, education and the creative industries.

The workshop was organized as part of the CulturalCorners project and aimed to foster innovation, collaboration and co-creation in the cultural tourism ecosystem. Participants worked in 6 teams, addressing a total of 7 key challenges related to the development of sustainable and engaging cultural tourism experiences.

Workshop Methodology

The workshop followed a design thinking approach, enabling participants to move from challenges to concrete solutions through a structured, hands-on process.

Participants were guided through key stages, including:

  • Understanding the challenges in cultural tourism

  • Ideation, using tools such as rapid idea generation and group brainstorming

  • Concept development, where teams selected and structured their strongest ideas

  • Prototype development, focusing on visitor experience, sustainability and digital elements

This methodology encouraged active participation, creativity and collaboration across different backgrounds.

From Challenges to Ideas

During the first part of the workshop, participants explored major challenges affecting cultural tourism, including seasonality, digitalisation and collaboration gaps, and generated a wide range of innovative ideas.

In the second part, these ideas were further developed into concept prototypes, making them more concrete and applicable to real-world contexts.

Key Ideas That Stood Out

Among the concepts developed, three ideas stood out for their innovation, feasibility and impact:

Educational Tourism for the Off-Season

To address the challenge of seasonality, participants proposed the promotion of educational tourism during off-season periods, through programs such as Erasmus mobility and group-based learning experiences.

The concept focuses on attracting students, youth groups and educational communities, offering them opportunities to engage with local culture.
This approach requires collaboration between public authorities, NGOs, educational institutions and hospitality providers, forming a strong ecosystem that supports year-round tourism activity.

Enhancing Cultural Experiences through VR/AR

To tackle the digitalisation gap, participants explored the use of VR and AR technologies to create more inclusive and immersive cultural experiences.

For example, visitors could digitally explore heritage sites that are not physically accessible, such as the interior of monuments or restricted areas.
This concept highlights the role of universities, innovation labs, cultural heritage sites and public stakeholders in developing and implementing such solutions.

Integrated Cultural Tourism Packages

Addressing the lack of collaboration across the sector, participants proposed the development of all-in-one cultural tourism packages.

These would be created through partnerships between hotels, tour operators, guides and local businesses, combining accommodation, transport, cultural activities and thematic experiences such as agrotourism, wine tourism and sports tourism.

The goal is to offer visitors holistic and seamless experiences, while strengthening cooperation across the tourism ecosystem.

Looking Ahead

The workshop demonstrated the strong potential of co-creation processes in generating innovative ideas and strengthening connections between stakeholders.

By bringing together tourism, hospitality and events, the CulturalCorners Innovation Workshop contributed to shaping more sustainable, creative and collaborative approaches to cultural tourism.
